North Carolina Continuing Education Requirements

Continuing Education Hours
  • 24hrs biennially (including 3hrs of Ethics)
    Life & Health Producers - Property & Casualty Producers - Adjusters
Specific Course Subject Requirements
    Ethics Requirement:
  • 3hrs Ethics each renewal
    Flood Insurance Requirements
  • Property & Casualty Producers - Adjusters - Personal Lines Producers
    3hrs every 4 years
    Long Term Care Requirements:
  • Initial 8-hour training requirement: All producers licensed prior to January 1, 2011 must complete an initial 8-hour training course by December 31, 2011 prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating long-term care partnership products.

    All producers licensed on or after January 1, 2011 must also complete this training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products. 

    *Residents who satisfy the training requirements of another state will be deemed compliant with this requirement if the insurance company chooses to accept the training completed in another state.

  • Ongoing 4-hour training requirement:
    After completing the initial 8-hour LTCP training requirement, producers must complete a 4 hour  follow-up training course every 24-month compliance period following the initial training.

License Renewal Date
  • Every 2 years, based on the last day of the licensee's birth month. 
    Licensees who were born in an even-numbered year must complete their CE in even-numbered years. 
    Licensees who were born in an odd-numbered year must complete their CE in odd-numbered years.

Carryover of Continuing Education Hours.
  • Excess credit hours can be carried forward to the next license term.
    Excess hours in ethics or flood insurance will carry forward as general credit.
Course Repetition
  • Courses may not be repeated within a 2 year period.
Proctor/ Monitor Requirements For Final Exam
  • Exams are required to be monitored by a disinterested third party.
    The proctor may not be a friend, relative, or co-worker of the licensee, nor anyone with a financial interest in the success of the licensee taking the examination.
Exemptions
  • Licensee must be 65 years of age or older and has been continuously licensed in the line of insurance for at least 25 years, and holds a nationally recognized professional designation for the line of insurance. 
    Ethics and/or flood requirements must STILL be met.
  • Licensee must be 65 years of age or older and has been continuously licensed in the line of insurance for at least 25 years, and certifies to the North Carolina Department of Insurance every year that he or she is an inactive agent who neither solicits nor takes part in the day-to-day operation of the agency. 
    Ethics and/or flood requirements must STILL be met.
  • The licensee is already exempt for one authority in which he or she is licensed.
    Ethics and/or flood requirements must STILL be met.
  • Nonresident adjusters who live in a state where the licensee is licensed for the same type of adjuster license held in North Carolina, or who are qualified for licensure in North Carolina due to adopting a state other than North Carolina for adjuster licensing purposes, are required to be in good standing with their home state in order to be exempt from the North Carolina CE requirements. 
  • Nonresident producers are not required to completed the North Carolina CE requirements as long as the producer is in good standing with his or her home state.
  • Military and medical exemptions are granted on a case-by-case basis.
Certificates Of Completion
  • Print your certificate of completion online once you have completed your exam.
Reporting Of Continuing Education Hours
  • The course provider reports credits earned to the insurance department or its designated agency.
